USMLE

USMLE, short for the United States Medical Licensing Examination, is a comprehensive three-step examination process overseen by the Federation of State Medical Boards of the USA (FSMB). This examination is a prerequisite for medical professionals aspiring to practice medicine in the United States. The USMLE is jointly governed by representatives from FSMB, the NBME (National Board of Examiners), and the ECFMG (Educational Commission for Foreign Medical Graduates).

Designed and curated by a committee of medical experts, including scientists, clinicians, and medical educators from diverse fields, the USMLE evaluates candidates' knowledge, skills, and competence in the medical domain.

Comprising three main steps, namely Step 1, Step 2 (further divided into Clinical Skills (CS) and Clinical Knowledge (CK), and Step 3, the USMLE serves as a crucial milestone for medical professionals on their journey to a successful medical career in the USA.

2. Students enrolled in the Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine (DO) program must attend a school accredited by the American Osteopathic Association (AOA), which accredits osteopathic schools, colleges, and universities.

3. Students who graduated outside the US and Canada must have their medical school listed in the World Directory of Medical Schools (WDOMS), meeting the ECFMG's criteria and eligibility requirements.

Step 3 Exam

Eligibility for USMLE Step 3 includes the following criteria:

1. Students must have completed an MD or equivalent degree from a medical school, college, or university accredited by the LCME (Liaison Committee on Medical Education).

Regarding the time limit to complete the USMLE, while the board does not set a specific time frame, it is generally recommended to complete the USMLE within seven years. This seven-year period is often considered the standard time limit for all students aspiring to pursue a career or higher education in the USA through the USMLE.

Number of attempts

Students can attempt the USMLE exam a maximum of three times within a 12-month period. However, if a student wishes to attempt the exam for the fourth time, they must wait 12 months after the first attempt and a minimum of 6 months after the third attempt. This means that students can take three attempts within the first year, and for the fourth and subsequent attempts, they must wait for at least six months from the time of their last attempt.

It's essential to note that the maximum number of attempts allowed to qualify for the USMLE exam procedure may vary depending on the state in which students plan to practice. Generally, the maximum number of attempts for the USMLE steps is limited to six.
